Who am I?
My name is Nigel Reed and I am the author of Coaching Youth Soccer For Success. I have been involved in soccer as a player in England during the 60's, Australia during the 70's and 80's and more recently as a youth soccer coach for players from 6 years old thru to 16 years old.
So I played in the 60's in England - since then?
I became involved with coaching youth soccer when I took my son to the club that I used to play for. Typical of alot of young soccer teams, none of the parents had any experience in soccer, and as I was known at the club from my playing days, I was volunteered to be the coach. That was in 2000, and little did I know at that point that I would be embarking on a long journey of discovery and enjoyment. Since that time I have attended a number of coaching courses, gained acreditation to senior level and spent way too much time reading books, studying videos and watching and studying soccer games. I have gained an immense amount of knowledge throughout my 40 years involvement in soccer, and would like to give something back of value to help those starting out, or those that are searching for greater and better knowledge of soccer. My passion for the game was rekindled due to the enthusiasm of my two boys. I love watching them play and am so glad that I can contribute to their passion of the game.
Am I good coach?
I have been learning lot about coaching. Although I played to a resonable level, and was a national representative, I have found that being a good player means very little when it comes to coaching.I have coached youth/kids soccer since 2000 and have had some success and some failure, but I continue to strive for improvement, and no that perserverance will ensure the teams that I coach and the players success.
Advice for you?
My advice to any parent is "Get Involved". I was lucky enough to be able to coach my boys and help them discover their inner talent for soccer. If you can coach, then make sure you attend as many courses as time permits and get accredited. Even if you were a star soccer player, you will learn so much from attending a soccer coaching course that will help you to be a better youth soccer coach. If you can't coach, there are still a number of ways to help your children and be part of their lives, help the team, kick a ball with them, anything! If you get involved, I can guarentee that it will be something that they will thank you for ever, and something that you will thank them for ever!
Why did I make this website?
I built this site to help with the development of young soccer players throughout the world.I wish you good luck in your endeavours - unless you play my team of course :) Practice makes permanent!
