Youth Soccer Drills - How to use them effectively

Nearly all of your practice sessions will incorporate one or more youth soccer drills, but the secret to success is to know which ones to use and how to use the soccer drills to get the most out of them. You will need a number of drills available and you will need to know which ones are used for different coaching points. But simply having hundreds of different soccer drills will not make you a better coach, or necessarily help your team play better.

You do need a number of interesting and fun drills at your disposal to make sure that you are teaching your players to play better soccer

The main purpose of any soccer drill is to teach players certain aspects of the game, and ensure that the players learn that particular aspect.

For instance what is the best drill to help players

  • Dribble
  • Pass the ball
  • Shield the ball
  • Receive the ball
  • Compete for the ball
  • Tackle
  • Delay the oppositions attack
  • Decide if they should tackle or delay the opposition
  • Look to switch the ball
  • Provide the best supporting positions
  • Use the width of the field
  • Learn how to communicate effectively
  • Learn how to receive a ball
  • ...etc, etc....

The key to using soccer drills effectively is to be able to explain the coaching point that the drill addresses.

This is done by breaking the coaching point into 4 steps

  1. Learn the skill under no pressure, and ensure that players technique is right
  2. Learn the skill under minimal pressure
  3. Learn the skill under full pressure

The 4th step is the most vital, and that is conducting a game that focuses on the drill or skill just learnt. It is in small sided games where you will set the conditions so that players will learn:

  1. How to use the skill
  2. When and where to use the skill

At this stage the players should understand how to apply the skill, and hopefully know when to apply it.
